bitcoind – Node won’t start after raspberry pi update

I shut down my new node today for the first time using the stop command to update and restart the Raspberry Pi that it runs on.

After booting the pi back up, I do the full path command to run bitcoind, and get the result
Bitcoin Core Starting

However, it never actually starts – I know both from the lack of blinking on the hard drive the node is on, and if I try to do any kind of bitcoin-cli command I get the error:

error: Could not locate RPC credentials. No authentication cookie could be found, and RPC password is not set. See -rpcpassword and -stdinrpcpass. Configuration file: (/mnt/bitcoin/bitcoin.conf)

I am using sudo to execute bitcoind so that isn’t the issue. When I set up the node I added the daemon to crontab which of course isn’t doing the trick either.

I have done about an hour of googling but it seems only one other person has had this issue, and for them it was simply not running root – but for me running as root obviously isn’t helping. Is there any way to fix this short of wiping the drive and spending 2 weeks to sync again?
